How to build sentences for kids Kids start learning about sentences when they are in 1st grade. Their basics of the English language and English grammar starts building from here. Kids start to make sense out of the words and start adding more words to a sentence to make something new. They have already started speaking and speak sentences, now they just need to know how to write them and make them consciously according to the rules of English. However, the teachers must know that this is just the beginning and if you expect kids to make some big sentences then you are at a mistake here. They cannot make sentences of more than three to four words. Therefore, the teacher must know how to build sentences for kids. To give you a little guidance, I have written a few words that may be helpful for you to get a start. 1. Start with very small sentences Since these are just kids don’t give them any big sentences. Even a four to the five-word sentence would be a big one for kids of this young age. Start with two and three words sentences. This will enable kids to grasp the idea of sentences more easily and how words combine together to form a sentence. For example, I eat bananas, He is playing etc. 2. Make it more fun Think of some fun activity for the kids in which they can come up with different sentences. For example, writing a birthday card for their friend, or a happy Mother’s Day card for their mothers. Bring some colors into this activity and the kids would be better able to learn the concept of sentences and how they can come up with sentences that say exactly what they want to say. 3. Keep it slow Don’t go very fast. If you have to repeat the same sentence, again and again, several times, do it. The kids need some time to get used to the new concept and will need to have the full attention of the teacher. Don’t burden the kids with a bunch of new sentences every day, it will be too much pressure for the kids and they will not enjoy it. Keep it slow, don’t move forward until you are sure that the kid has understood the sentence completely. Sentences are the basics of the English language. Whatever the kids learn at this stage is going to stay with them for the rest of their lives, therefore this base needs to be strong with clear concepts.
