How does the suffering of former children of war effect their own children's lives more than 70 years later? The key in understanding his own life lies for filmmaker Oliver Kanehl in understanding the life of his ancestors. The search for the causes of the subtle but powerful effects that National Socialism and the war of extermination left in his family led Kanehl to his film "Do you speak German?" - Looking for Traces in the Land of Memory. Kanehl takes the viewer to Poland on a search for the places of his father's childhood during the war. He carefully approaches the topics of farewell and death. And he also examines the trauma of violence and the loss of home in his own family. We're experiencing an intimate film where past and present collide when today's normal meets the frights of yesterday.
